  Family Values: The Visitors
By Karen Bonasso

My daughters are coming to visit today. We are all joyfully anticipating their arrival.

It makes me think of how Lazarus and Martha and Mary probably felt when they heard Jesus was on his way to visit them. Each had their own way of preparing for Him. Just as we do in our preparation for my daughters.( I tried to make chocolate chip cookies and freeze them but my husband and other daughters found them…!) It's interesting that, in the Gospels, this is the only family unit we see Jesus interacting with in this way. We see Him once at Peter's house and we hear of His family coming to Him. But this little family of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary seemed to be the place where He went to rest and enjoy peace and safety. There was something in their interaction together and their response to Him that was attractive to the Lord.

I love my family and I hope our home will always be a place where my children and their  families can find love and peace and joy and safety. If God dwells here and is given place in our relationships together, I know that those things will always be present.

The Scriptures indicate that God delights to be in the midst of family. He can and should be anticipated and honored in family life.

This is not as impractical or abstract as it may seem.  In the coming articles I hope to give some insight into how to help your families become a place of love and peace and joy and safety for all the members; A place where visitors, whether family or friends, also may experience these things as well.
